Medela Contact Nipple Shields are designed as a temporary method of protecting sore and cracked nipples whilst breastfeeding. They are placed on the nipple prior to nursing and the baby latches onto the protector and feeds through it.
The nipple shields have been designed to ensure that they do not interfere with milk flow and to give a larger area for the baby to latch on to.
Medela nipple shields have a large cut away section to the top, meaning there is always skin to skin contact between the mother and baby.
The nipple shields are made from a soft, pliable silicone, meaning they are comfortable for both baby and mother and have no taste to confuse the baby.
Sizing – the nipple shields are available in two sizes. The majority of women require size small but if in any doubt, measure across your nipple (not areola) to check.
Size small – 16mm, Size large – 24mm. Supplied as a pack of 2.
Please note: whilst nipple shields are an excellent way to protect sore and cracked nipples, if they symptoms persist we recommend that you consult your midwife or breastfeeding counselor as incorrect positioning and/or latch are often the cause of soreness.
