Breastfeeding Mothers Get Same Amount of Sleep as Formula
Tuesday, 9 November 2010
Many new mothers believe that they will get less sleep if they breastfeed their baby, but a new study published this week in Pediatrics journal has shown that this is simply not true.
The study followed a total of 80 women for 12 weeks – 27 exclusively breastfeeding, 18 exclusively formula feeding and the rest mixed feeding.
“We found absolutely no difference in the mother's sleep based on how babies were fed," said Montgomery-Downs, an assistant professor of psychology and coordinator of the behavioral neuroscience program at West Virginia University in Morgantown.
During the study, the mothers kept diaries of their sleep patterns and the quality of their sleep and also wore devices that measured how much sleep they got each night.
Many new parents think that if they formula feed their baby, they will all get more sleep at night, but this is simply not true, another great reason for continuing to breastfeed your baby.
