| ![]() Cloth Nappies: Why are they Best?Friday, 17 September 2010 For Your BabyComfortable baby Real nappies are made from soft or natural fabrics rather than the artificial materials used in disposable nappies. They feel lovely on the skin and help to keep your baby cool - many parents report that the tight fitting plastic in throw away nappies causes their baby to sweat in the nappy area. Skin conditions Cloth nappies with a breathable nappy wrap allow lots of air to circulate, keeping your baby's skin fresh. This could be why many parents find that switching to real nappies clears up nappy rash and eases the discomfort of eczema and other skin conditions. Toilet training Anecdotal reports from parents show that washable nappies can help with early potty-training – without the chemicals and gels that hold the wee, the toddler is more aware of when they have wee'd or poo'ed, encouraging them to ask for the potty. Health Disposable nappy manufacturers do not say what is in their nappies but it is known that they contain up to 200 chemicals and no one knows just how many of them will be absorbed through a baby's delicate skin and into the body. Some studies have shown that heat in the nappy area can lead to reduced sperm counts in boys. Other reports show that boys wearing disposable nappies have higher temperatures in the nappy area and although there is no conclusive link between disposable nappies and lower sperm counts, many parent do find that their babies sweat when wearing throw away nappies. For your pocket’s sakeBabies are expensive and looking after their poos is no exception. Your newborn baby will need changing around 6-10 times a day and up to 7,000 times before potty training. This could you cost you over £1000 if you use disposable nappies. And you will be able to use these real nappies for another baby or even sell them on the thriving second-hand nappy market, saving you even more money. Don’t worry if you can’t use real nappies every change, even if you only use 2 cloth nappies a day, that is still 730 less cups of oil and around £100 saved every year. The environmentUK parents throw away around 3 billion disposable nappies every year - that is a lot of landfill! Each one of these nappies will require around one cup of crude oil to make the plastic in the waterproof wrap – all to be thrown away, a massive waste of our natural resources. A Women's Environmental Network commissioned study shows that disposable nappies use:
as reusable nappies. It is believed that it will take up to 500 years for these nappies to decompose (all the while producing dangerous methane gas), which could be a big headache for our grandchildren. So all in all, washable nappies are the best.
