PersonalFit Breast Shield, choosing the correct size

Wednesday, 24 November 2010

If you are using the wrong size breastshield you could be at risk of reducing  your milk flow or causing breast problems such as Mastitis.

Benefits of a correct fit

When your breastshield is the correct size, it will ensure that your milk ducts are not compressed (squashed) – this will allow you to pump the maximum amount of milk and ensure that the breast is fully emptied.

What is a good fit?

By answering the following questions, you can ensure that you have the correct size breastshield.

Centre the nipple in the tunnel of the breastshield. Now begin pumping and check the following points:

  • Is your nipple moving freely in the tunnel?
  • Is none or only very little tissue of the areola being pulled into the tunnel of the breastshield?
  • Do you recognize gentle, rhythmic movements in the breast at each pump cycle?
  • Do you feel the breast emptying all over?
  • Is your nipple free of pain?

If the answer to any of these questions is no, then you will need to choose a different size breastshield.

You can buy Medela Breastshields in a range of sizes.  Choose the size required by measuring across your nipple as it is the nipple that will fit into the tunnel part of the breast shield.
