| ![]() Washable Nappies: Fact or Fiction?Tuesday, 21 September 2010 Real nappies make nappy change time complicated. FICTIONCloth nappies are really simple to use – if the nappy is wet, simply take the paper liner out and put the nappy and reusable liner in your nappy bucket instead of the bin. If the nappy is dirty, flush the poo down the loo (no more smelly rubbish bins) and place the nappy in the bucket. Cloth nappies are really difficult to put on. FICTIONShaped nappies, pocket nappies or all in one nappies are very easy to put on, no more difficult than disposables and no folding required. Flat nappies do need to be folded but it only takes a few seconds and if you use a nappi nippa you don't have to worry about catching your baby with the sharp point. Real nappies will make my house smell. FICTIONOnce you have disposed of the poo in the loo (a matter of seconds), you pop the wet nappy in the bucket and put the lid on – no smell. FICTIONDisposable nappy manufacturers like to imply that you can leave a baby in a nappy for hours and hours but I don't like that idea really, Guidelines suggest that nappies should be changed every 4 hours during the day time (more frequently for newborns) and a correctly fitting cloth nappy should be able to cope with this. Real nappies leak. FICTIONA well fitting real nappy that is the right shape and absorbency for your baby should not leak. Some parents report that real nappies actually fit their baby better, so they have less leaks than in disposables. My baby will get nappy rash if I use cloth nappies.
